IP65 vs IP66 vs IP67 vs IP68: Your Guide to Waterproof LED Strip Ratings

IP65 vs IP66 vs IP67 vs IP68: Your Guide to Waterproof LED Strip Ratings

Have you ever installed outdoor lighting only to worry about rain damage? Or hesitated to use LED strips in bathrooms due to moisture concerns? Understanding IP (Ingress Protection) ratings is the key to worry-free lighting in wet or damp environments. In this guide, we’ll break down the differences between IP65, IP66, IP67, and IP68 ratings to help you choose the right protection for your project.

Decoding the IP Rating System

The IP code is an international standard that classifies the level of protection provided by enclosures. The two digits after “IP” indicate:

First digit: Protection against solid objects (dust, 0–6)

Second digit: Protection against liquids (water, 0–8)

The higher the number, the better the protection. Here’s what you need to know about the most common waterproof ratings for LED strips.

IP30: Non-Waterproof (Bare Board)

Protection Level: Protected against solid objects larger than 2.5mm, but not waterproof—suitable only for dry indoor environments.

Best For:

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, closets
  • Display cabinets, bookshelves
  • Dry, dust-free interiors

IP65: Silicone Coating Waterproof

Protection Level: Dust-proof and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Suitable for damp indoor or sheltered outdoor areas.

Best For: Indoor kitchens and bathrooms (away from direct spray)

IP66: Heat-Shrink Sleeve Waterproof

Protection Level: Dust-proof and protected against slight water splash from any direction. The PC heat-shrink sleeve effectively seals the LED strip, offering enhanced touch safety and reliable indoor waterproof performance.

Best For:

  • Bathrooms with occasional splashes
  • Garages and laundry rooms

Note: IP65 and IP66 is often recommended for indoor use only.

IP67: Silicone Sheathing Waterproof

Protection Level: Dust-proof and capable of withstanding immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes.

Best For:

  • Garden Poolside areas (not submerged)
  • Outdoor eaves, balcony railings,signage
  • Outdoor areas exposed to rain

IP68: Fully Wrapped Silicone with Waterproof Connectors

Protection Level: Maximum protection against dust and continuous immersion in water under specified conditions.

Best For:

  • Swimming pools and aquariums
  • Underwater landscape lighting
  • High-humidity industrial environments

Note: There is an 3M adhesive on the back of IP30/IP65/IP66 led strips; For IP67/IP68 led strips, we equipped the mounting clips and screws for easy installation(No adhesive backing).

Choosing the correct IP rating ensures safety, performance, and durability for your lighting project. Each rating serves distinct purposes, from simple indoor decoration to challenging underwater applications. Whether you’re lighting a garden pond, enhancing a pool, or simply adding ambiance to a patio, understanding these ratings helps you create stunning, reliable lighting—no matter the weather.
